With the need for iron in our diet to keep us healthy, 4th and 5th Grade Science students have confirmed - iron (Fe) is present in our breakfast cereal as advertised!
A recent experiment was conducted on more than one brand of cereal. Here are our methods if you wish to replicate the experiment at home: students took about a cup of Total* Cereal, placed it in a bag of water, and let sit for about 30 minutes. When we came back to the mixture, we used a magnet to detect if iron was present by moving the magnet across the bottom of the bag. Yes, iron was present in our cereal. We then took it one step further and started looking at the iron content in other cereals. We tested a cereal not advertised for its iron content, and as we deduced, there was not as much iron to be found. A few students conducted further tests on their cereal at home.
