In Science class we are learning about kinetic and potential energy. We also learned that kinetic energy produces sound, by using vibrations. We learned that the shorter the string on a guitar the higher the pitch, the smaller the wind instrument the higher the pitch. A big drum will produce a lower pitch. The students then experimented using rubber bands, books, and a ruler. They learned that if the ruler was moved and it made the rubber band shorter, the pitch was higher. The longer side of the rubber band produced a lower pitch. As a culminating project the students will work together to create a roller coaster, using foam tubing, a marble, and tape, to show potential and kinetic energy and the work it produces.
