First Grade started the study of space with the introduction of the Sun.They learned how important this star is in our solar system. Not only does it give us our light, but it also is our phenomenal heat producer. The Sun, as the center, has all the planets orbiting it. The children made awesome posters showing all the planets starting with Mercury-the closest planet to the Sun, then Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and ending with Neptune. A picture of Red Giant Stars, Blue Dwarf Stars, Yellow Stars, and a Supernova (an exploding star that forms new stars) added to their study. They also made a pull out booklet of the solar system showing the positions of the planets from the Sun and also how many moons each planet has. As they looked up, they learned about shadows, action and reaction rocket propulsion, static electricity remote control rollers and super sparklers and rotocopters and foam flyers using air movements. Their vocabulary was enriched with words such as rotation, orbit, planet rings, satellites, landrovers, craters, meteors, temperature, propulsion, and static electricity. In addition, during this quarter, the children were recognized for having read over 700 books collectively thus far. WOW! In Religion, the children focused their study on Lent. They completed a booklet of the Stations of the Cross and Holy Week and made their own individual Bible Stories collection booklet. Math was focused on Base Ten applications and problem solving, and proving all their answers.
